| Abstract: | Sent from Lhasa in NS 859 (1739 CE), this letter from Kaṃca Purī to Rāya Bhāratī, Balabhadra Purī, and their monastic partners in Patan details trade operations amidst a disruptive smallpox epidemic. Purī announces his appointment by the Tibetan king as mahanta of an akhāḍā in Lhasa, requests further consignments of corals and topazes, and reports shipments of gold and three bakūs of musk pods via Tibetan couriers. Crucially, he lays out a precise distribution plan for 9,600 moharas in cash and commodities among eight named associates, while urging the Patan monastery to dispatch a reliable assistant to Tibet. |
