Historical Documents of Pre-modern Nepal

Search, explore, and study thousands of documents, manuscripts,
inscriptions and digital editions from across historic Nepal

This section gives access to the personal names, place names, and geographic names that occur throughout the Nepalese documents edited on this platform. Two complementary views are offered: the Attestations, an exhaustive, automatically generated index of every name as it appears in the source texts, and the Authority File, a curated register of identified persons, places, and institutions with structured biographical and historical information.

Attestations (Named entities)

This index lists every occurrence of a personal name, place name,or geographic name tagged in the XML editions on this platform, generated automatically from the source texts. Entries reflect the spelling and form found in each individual document, including variants, abbreviations, and uncertain readings; they have not been normalized or cross-checked against one another. Each entry links to the specific edition in which it occurs.

For more information about identified persons, places, and geographic entities, see the Authority File.

Authority File (Ontology)

The Authority File is a curated register of selected persons, places, regions, and organizations mentioned in the documents edited on this platform. Unlike the Attestations, which record every occurrence as it appears in a given text, entries here represent a single, disambiguated identity, bringing together variant name forms, dates, genealogical and institutional relationships, and other historical details drawn from across the corpus. Where possible, entries are linked to established external authorities (GND, VIAF, Wikidata, and GeoNames), situating the persons and places of pre-modern Nepal within the broader landscape of linked open data.
