| Abstract: | Sent from Tibet in NS 859 (1739 CE), this letter from Kaṃca Purī to Gosāīṃ Rāya Bhāratī and other clan members in the Jhorachẽ Maṭha, Patan, reports on trade operations amid a deadly smallpox epidemic in Shigatse. Quoting the local gold price at 23.5 moharas, Purī notes that widespread mortality has disrupted travel, though he managed to dispatch a parcel via a trader associated with Dhanidhara. He instructs the Patan house to settle transactions with Prabhā Purī regardless of market disparities, forward consignments of corals and topazes via Nārāyaṇa Purī and Prabhā Purī, and explains that being stationed in Lhatse has constrained his movement until trade routes reopen. |
