Abstract:

This is a travel diary recording Prime Minister Juddha Śaṃśera Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā's (April 19, 1875-November 20, 1952) official visit to Calcutta. He was invited by Viceroy Linlithgow. His travel started on 12th December 1939 from the Siṃhadarbār Kathmandu and ended on his return to the palace on 17th February 1940. He arrived in Calcutta on 22 December and after staying there for 11 days his return visit started on the 2nd of January. During his stay, Juddha Śaṃśera visited Viceroy Linlithgow, John Herbert, Queen of Tripura, Savarkar, and many other people. Apart from the historical photos and documents, this diary records Juddha Śaṃśera's conversations with many people. Juddha Śaṃśera arrived at Birgunj on the 5th of January and engaged there in some administrative work for some days. On 14th January he arrived at the Amlekhgunj Camp where together with his team and Lieutenant-Colonel Gaff he hunted wild animals for one month. Komalanātha Adhikārī (VS 1950-2023) who was also a member of this travel group wrote this volume. Adhikārī has translated some of the books from Sanskrit into Nepali. His Komalagītā is a popular text for which he got a prize from Juddha Śaṃśera in VS 1989 and for his next work Naiṣadhīyacarita (an epic written by Bhāsa in Sanskrit which he translated into Nepali) he got 'Madana Puraskāra' prize in VS 2020 (https://guthi.madanpuraskar.org/people/komal-nath-adhikari/).
