Type, original: bound book; original

Content

Abstract: This is a daily record book maintained by Mohana Śamsera Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā. The name of the author cannot be found in the available part of this incomplete volume but in the first document, the narrator calls Babara Śamsera a younger brother, from which we can surmise that it is maintained by Mohana Śamsera. This daily record book covers the time frame from the 18th day of the Caitra VS 1971 (31st March 1915 CE) to the 4th day of Caitra VS 1972 (16th March 1916 CE). The year is not mentioned in the record, however, it can be determined with the help of other historical records. It appears that most of the documents were produced in Deharadun. The Army Headquarters in Simala directly reports to the Prime Minister of Nepal, who issues orders through the Army Headquarters and maintains communication with various platoons (Second Rifle platoon, Mahindradala platoon, Savuja Platoon, Gorkhā platoon etc.). Babara Śamsera was leading the Headquarter in Simala. This record book serves multiple purposes. Firstly, it documents joint programs, activities and training carried out in collaboration with the British, as well as the distribution of allowances received from them in Dehradun. Additionally, the book also includes information regarding various health-related issues, such as outbreaks of cholera, mumps, and pox, which are recorded for reference. Furthermore, the record book contains accounts of the army's participation in wars around the globe e.g., the Mesopotamia War where they worked alongside British forces. This information provides a historical record of the army's involvement in international conflicts, capturing their contributions and experiences. Lastly, the document includes details about a purification ritual known as Pānī Patiyā. This ritual is performed by the royal priest of Nepal and is aimed at cleansing and sanctifying the cadets who have returned from war, symbolizing the maintenance of their caste status in society after their military service.
