This is the Jaṅgī Ain (code of conduct for members of the armed forces of Nepal) promulgated by Candra Śaṃśera. On the first page, there are two stamps, the first one is of Prime-minister Candra Śaṃśera containing the date 1916 and the other is of Commander-in-chief Bhīma Śaṃśera dating 1901. This document identifies itself as a rukkā from Candra Śaṃśera and a patra from Bhīma Śaṃśera. The Ain has 171 articles, all directing the army personnel about the code of conduct and punishments which will be applicable during the period when they are deployed in foreign lands for a war.
Candra Śaṃśera sent around two hundred thousand Gorkha soldiers to India to help the British Ally in the First World War (1914–18) (Shaha 1990: 49). This document is prepared as a code of conduct for these armies. This document is not properly dated, only the stamps hold the date. It is possible that this ain was prepared before sending armies in the First World War and this copy got stamps only later. There are small stamps of Candra Śaṃśera at the opening and closing of every article.
