| Abstract: | Head-and-shoulders studio portrait of a middle-aged man in front of a draped backdrop. He faces the camera, has a moustache and a ṭīkā mark on his forehead, and wears round wire-framed spectacles. His dark wrapped turban (pagarī) carries a large embossed ornament (sirpech) showing Mahiṣāsuramardinī, with a tall white plume (kalgī) above it. Over a white daurā, the traditional closed-neck, knee-length shirt, he wears a dark Western-style jacket; only the daurā's neck and front are visible. Two things suggest he was a high official of the Rana period: his court headdress and the photograph's place in a document collection that holds many Rana-period diaries. Calculations in blue ink were added to the verso later. They seem to record amounts to be paid to workers, because the fifth line has the word peskī (पेस्की), an advance paid before work is finished or before a salary falls due. |
