Śrī 5 Sarkāra

No. 4681

[unknown seal]

Hail! A letter (arjī) from Bālāśaṃkara with crores and crores of auspicious blessings from here to him who is shining with manifold rows of eulogy [such as] ‘The venerable crest-jewel of the multitude of mountain kings’ and Naranārāyaṇa (i.e. an epithet of Viṣṇu) etc., high in honour, the venerable supreme king of great kings, the fivefold venerable great king, Rājendra Vikrama Śāha, the brave swordsman, the divine king always triumphant in war.

The tidings here are fine. I wish Your Excellency good health there. Further (uprāṃta): O protector of the poor! My petition, dated on … [week]day2 , the 5th of the bright fortnight of Bhādra [in the Vikrama year era 1899], was likely received by -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra) via the English postal service for Your Lordship’s consideration. After reviewing the petition, this servant, through Your Lordship’s gate of mercy (dharmadvāra), has humbly placed himself as a candidate for patronage (paravaraśa). I am sending to -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra) 2 copies of the Delhi newspaper. They may go into your consideration.

An extra petition is as follows: A period of 2–3 years has passed, and in that time, no patronage or salary has reached this servant from the gate of mercy of -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra). This servant has fallen into deep debt. Now, without receiving money, not even governmental work can be carried out, nor can I support myself. [Therefore,] I hope that, in consideration of my present condition, and with a gracious glance upon this unworthy servant, an amount corresponding to my salary, as deemed appropriate, might be issued to me from -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra).

And should there be any task or service deemed suitable for me by -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra), this servant shall perform it dutifully and in full accordance. What more need I request of you? -1- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra) is all-knowing (sarvajña). May my wrongdoings be forgiven, whether done knowingly or unknowingly.

On Saturday, the 5th of the dark fortnight of Āśvina in the [Vikrama era] year 1899 (1842 CE). From Delhi.

Auspiciousness, Auspiciousness, Auspiciousness.

This arjī is from Bālāśaṃkara Brāhmaṇa.

Commentary

This letter from Bālāśaṃkara, addressed to King Rājendra Vikrama Śāha, combines formal royal praise with a personal plea. Like in other letters (see DNA_0001_0076, DNA_0002_0039, DNA_0002_0049, DNA_0003_0025, and others), Bālāśaṃkara reports sending newspapers for the king’s consideration and urgently requests overdue salary payments, explaining his resulting financial hardship. He humbly offers continued loyal service and appeals for royal compassion, reflecting the dependency of courtiers on royal patronage and the formalized style of petitions in this period.
