Synopsis

This document concerning the Jyotirliṅgeśvara Māhādeva Guṭhī of Sankhu consists of two parts. The first part is an earlier report, dated Saturday, the 30th of Caitra VS 1991, submitted by two officers of the Guṭhī Lagata Jā̃ca Aḍḍā, kharadāraDīrghamāna Josī, a resident of Yeṭakhā, and subbāRāmabādura Śreṣṭa, a resident of Chetrapāṭī. It provides details about guṭhī land belonging to the Jyotirliṅgeśvara Māhādeva Guṭhī, the income generated by it and expenditures involved in the daily and casual rituals of the temple of the same name.

Lambodara Bhaṭṭa and Harilāla Bhaṭṭa were previous priests of the temple. Both of them served the temple turn by turn, each for one month. In VS 1974 Lambodara Bhaṭṭa, who stated that no sanada-patra for the guṭhī’s land had ever been issued, presented a lagata in which he described the land he was using at the time and the amount of money he and others were paying on it. Later the successors of Lambodara Bhaṭṭa, his two sons, namely Nārāṃprasāda and Surjelāla, took over the priestly duties, again turn by turn, and started to make use of the guṭhī property.

The document goes on deal with the legal problem arising from fact that no sanada-patra had ever been issued. One solution would have been to turn the guṭhī land into raikara, thus allowing rent to be paid directly to the government. Doing so, however, would have put a halt to the daily worship at the temple. Thus a compact was drawn up under daphā 33 of the savāla of Guṭhī Lagata Jā̃ca Aḍḍā that allowed the guṭhī to continue on under its present status once the Aḍḍā made a full accounting of its own.

On Sunday, the 27th of Pauṣa VS 1991, in accordance with daphā 91 of the savāla of the Guṭhī Lagata Jā̃ca Aḍḍā, a notice was posted on walls at various public places in the village, announcing that if anybody had any knowledge of guṭhī property being kept secret, they should disclose this information to the Aḍḍā within 35 days. Within the given period, however, no one came forward.

The report details the current status of individual land holdings, noting changes from that mentioned in the VS 1974 lagata. For instance, Sūrjelāla submitted a lagatamuchulkā stating that one Motilāla Śreṣta had erected a house and shop on guṭhī land without paying rent on it because he had a deed from his grandfather gifting the land to him. When one Candrabāhādura Śreṣta was questioned concerning the matter, he wrote that Motilāla Śreṣta had been paying rent to Surjelāla.

According to the lagata prepared by Laṃbodara Bhaṭṭa in VS 1974, Nandalāla Śreṣta, Laṃbodara, Durgālāla and Sīvalāla had been paying 2 rupees rent on certain guṭhī land; it was now Ganeśabāhādura who was using the property and making the same payment. Further, Meheramāna had built a house on land that came with a rent of 4 rupees, but the latter had been able to pay only 1 rupee; Lakṣmīnārāṃ Śreṣta had in the meantime agreed to pay the 4 rupees, and this change was now confirmed.

The priest Nārāṃprasāda had begun building a house on land at Māhādeva Ḍhokā but had been unable to finish it, so that in lieu of rent he had, according to the VS 1974 report, offered a silver belapatra1 weighing half a tolā. Now it was decided, lest the item disappear, that it had to be reoffered every year and brought to the Aḍḍā to be officially registered.

The new listing of expenditures was made based on both the VS 1974 report and written confirmation by the priests. From VS 1992, given the lack of a sanada-patra, the government would take charge of collecting revenue, and financial reports would be submitted to the Guṭhī Tahasīla, Guṭhī Kharca and Guṭhī Lāgata Jā̃ca. The priestly remuneration was to be fixed at seven rupees.

Two tables are appended to the above report. In the first table the names of the people using the guṭhī land, the location of the plots and the amount of income from them per year are noted. The persons using the land were: Candrabahādura Śreṣta, Herālāla Śreṣta, Lakṣmīnārāṃ Śreṣta, Kṛṣṇamāna Śreṣta, Jagatamāṃ Khupā Śreṣta, Bhīmabahādura Śreṣta (2), Nhuchelāla Śreṣta, Gaṇeśalāla Śreṣta, Bhīmabahādura Śreṣta (2), Rāmakṛśṇa Kārkī and Gaṇeśabahādura Śreṣta. The second table lists temple expenditures. The total income amounts to 25.60 mohāra rupaiyās; the total expenditures, 24.27.

Directly following this report, and apparently part of the same document, is the acknowledgement made on Monday, the 13th day of Sāun VS 1998 by kharīdāra Dirghamāna Josī of the Guṭhī Lagata Jā̃ca Aḍḍā and ḍīṭhā Bhairavalāla Śreṣta of the Guṭhī Tahabīla that the guṭhī had sent written notification that a temple building, specifically described, of the Jyotirliṅgeśvara complex had been added to its lagata.
