Abstract

In this list are recorded details of the buffalo sacrifices performed at the main courtyard (Mūlacoka) of the royal palace on the 14th of the bright fortnight of the month of Āśvina in VS 1900 (1843 CE), the concluding day of the autumnal Dasaĩ festival.

Commentary

The list tabulates the buffalo sacrifices performed at the Mūlacoka (lit. "main courtyard") of the royal palace on the 14th lunar day of the bright fortnight of Āśvina, when the rituals of the autumnal Dasaĩ festival conclude. Similar documents exist for the years VS 1886 (E_2776_0001), 1888 (E_2767_0049), 1902 (E_2779_0019, E_2764_0036), and 1908 (E_2779_0005).

Notes

1. Due to foldings, breakage and damage by water in the original document, and to an underexposure of the images on the microfilm, some akṣaras and words here and in the following are illegible. As far as possible they have been reconstructed on the basis of either parallel documents or parallelism between the entries. [⇑]

2. That the list refers to sacrifices at the Hanumānḍhokā palace can be inferred from the fact that many of the documents microfilmed on the same and neighbouring reels concern affairs relating to the old royal palace of Kathmandu. [⇑]

3. The first part of this name has been reconstructed on the basis of the parallel below (buffalo no. 67). [⇑]

4. Due to an underexposure of the microfilm the name of the person is hardly legible. The present reading appears to be the graphically most likely one. The occurance of the family name Lāmā, hinting at a Tibetan background of the person, would be strange, though, and would be its only instance within the complete batch of related documents (see Commentary). It therefore remains doubtful. [⇑]
