Abstract

This document tells of three officials' report to Śaṅkhadhara, the amālī of Patan, to confirm that the vimāna of Maystyendranātha's chariot was donated by a Bā̃ḍā and that the Luthāma Guṭha was established by him. It goes on to mention that Śaṅkhadhara signed and issued a bahālī document granting overseership of the guṭha to Rāmānanda, a descendant of the donor, upon orders from the queen regent.

The Venerable Queen - 1

In response to this1 , the two ḍiṭṭhās Rudranārāyaṇa and Bhāgīrāma, [along with] Premanārāṃ Brāhmaṇa, came to the amālī , SubedāraŚaṅkhadhara and said: "It is learned that the vimāna2 was offered [to the chariot of Matsyendranātha] by a Bā̃ḍā3 , and that, in addition, the same Bā̃ḍā established the Luthāma Guṭha for [the maintenance of] this vimāna. All informed persons among the 24 thousand inhabitants of Patan have stated [this]." When, however, -1- [i.e., the Venerable Queen] told amālī Śaṅkhadhara: "It is learned that Bhājudhana Jaisī was granted a rukkā without making [proper] enquiries. Annul4 [this] rukkā with [another] rukkā and grant a bahāli5 [document to Rāmānanda]," amālī Śaṅkhadhara gave his signature to the aforementioned bahālī [document]. A copy of that [document is below].6

Commentary

This document is a note written by a scribe. The queen mentioned in the upper margin of the document is very probably Rājarājeśvarī Devī, one of the regents for the underage king Girvāṇayuddha Vikrama Śāha. The document records the response of three officials of Patan who were asked to investigate the overseership of the Luthāma Guṭhī. They reported to amālī Śaṅkhadhara, after enquiring with Patan residents, that the guṭhī was indeed under the charge of the Bā̃ḍās. However, it apparently took a rukkā from the queen regent herself in order for the amālī to issue the document confirming the overseership of the guṭhī to them. The document archived as E_2254_0001D is probably the rukkā of the queen mentioned here.

Notes

1. I.e., in response to the order of amālī Śaṅkhadhara (see document E_2253_0015D). []

2. The gilt metal panels and the structure securing the sanctum of the chariot. []

3. The unnamed Bā̃ḍā here is Jīvarāja, the original sponsor of the vimāna of the chariot (see E_2253_0015A). []

4. hāni is corrected to hānī, "by striking". []

5. The term bahālī generally means a letter of appointment or a lease on property. However, it has apparently been used here to refer to a document that put overseership of the guṭha into the hands of Rāmānanda and his fellow guṭha members. []

6. This refers to E_2253_0015F, the following document in the collection. []
