Śrī

Venerable Mahārānī, the principal queen1 - 1

22

After that, when we3 told [Bhājudhana Jaisī] that we had obtained a signed document4 , he said: "If you are so great a man, bring a mohara [document to me]." While we [immediately] set about getting a mohara [document], [our] father5 said: "-1- (i.e., the principal queen6 ) will arrive from Kaṭahara Ban. I have seen it in a dream. Don't rush things." Obeying [our] eighty-year-old father, we remained patient for 5 months. [Then,] -1- (i.e., the principal queen) appeared. We petitioned [her]. "A he-goat cannot be sacrificed to [another] he-goat. How can the guṭha of one subject be [given] to another subject?" [She] understood the details and had a mohara issued. [Below] is a copy of the mohara that put the operation of our ancestors' guṭha back into our hands.7

Commentary

This document narrates events that occurred after Bhājudhana Jaisī refused returning overseership of the Luthāma Guṭhī to Rāmānanda and demanded that he first obtain a royal mohara. The document reports that Rāmānanda followed his father's advice and waited for five months to first meet the queen, who was returning from Kaṭahara Ban. Kaṭahara Ban is apparently the name of a village along the frontier in the Tarai where Queen Rājarājeśvarī, on her return to Nepal from Banaras, was stopped from entering into Nepal and thus was compelled to stay there for some time (see Rana 1970: 18).

The document does not mention any names, but the identity of persons referred to can be learned from other documents in the series.

Notes

1. The text is in the space below the invocation. The unnamed queen here is Rājarājeśvarī, the first wife of King Raṇabahādura Śāha. []

2. This Arabic number was added probably by the owner of the document to denote the document's place within the series. []

3. The narrators are Rāmānanda Bā̃ḍā and his fellow guṭhī members. []

4. The document referred to here is a letter from Cautarīyā Bam Śāha empowering Rāmānanda to assume overseership of the Luthāma Guṭha. See documents E_2253_0015B and E_2254_0001A for copies of this document. []

5. According to the genealogy prepared by Mañjutārā Śākya, the name of the father of Rāmānanda was Sarvānanda (see Śākya 2002: 66). []

6. Taken from the margin above. []

7. The mohara in question is reproduced in E_2253_0015C. []
