Abstract

This rukkā from King Gīrvāṇayuddha authorizes Syurām Pādhyā to perform rituals in the Tripurasundarī temple of Jumla Tiprīkoṭ and to enjoy revenue from land in Khānīgāũ and Vaijīvāḍo.

Glorious goddess Tripurasundarī (text: Trīpurāsundarī).1

Hail. A rukkā of the supreme king of great kings2

Āge: To Syurām Pādhyā

When they had conquered Jumla (text: Jumalo)3 , our courtiers (bhāradāra) offered Khānīgāũ (text: Ṣānīgāū) and Vaijīvāḍo to the glorious goddess Tripurasundarī (text: Trīpurāsundarī)4 of Tīprīkoṭ for [the support of] her worship. We [hereby] maintain the worship tradition [as] carried on up until today. [You, Syurām Pādhyā,] celebrate our victories and enjoy the remaining [surplus], mindful of your duties.

Commentary

The temple of Tripurasundarī referred to in the document is located on a hilltop of Tripurakot village development committee in Dolpa district.

2. Gīrvāṇayuddha (r. 1799-1816 CE) was the king of Nepal when this document was issued. [⇑]

3. The expansion of Gorkhā kingdom towards the west was considerably advanced during the regency of Bahadur Saha (1785-1794). Gorkhālī troops led by Kājī Śivanārāyaṇa Khatrī and Sardār Prabal Rāṇā made the first attack on Jumla in 1787, and within two years secured victory over the kingdom (Hamilton 1819: 287-88, Bajracharya 1992: 92-96).
