Abstract

This is a kacaharī jabānabandī muculkā (an officially witnessed, legally binding written statement) signed by three temple priests of Bhaktapur’s Tripurasundarī temple and eight trust members of the Parvapūjā guṭhī serving the temple. It lists annual revenue and expenditures of the guṭhī, and records temple assets. The document was prepared to be submitted to the government through the Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā.

Synopsis

Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā had asked eight members of the trust and three priests of the Tripurasundarī temple located in Bhaktapur’s Tulāche ṭola to prepare a detailed list of the temple property conferred through deeds of gift (dānapatra), śilāpatras, tāmrapatras, palm-leaf documents, lālamoharas or rukkā daskhatas; or recorded in registers relating to the temple’s guṭhī land; guṭhī land recorded in sanadas or else not recorded but nevertheless utilized as guṭhī property; houses and shops in the guṭhī’s hands; cultivators of the land; annual revenue produced from guṭhī property; annual expenditures; annual savings; ornaments made of gold or silver or with gems; metal pots; garments etc. The office had also ordered that the location of the properties and the person responsible for them be identified.

This document is a kacaharī jabānabandī muculkā (an officially witnessed, legally binding written statement) signed by the eight members of the trust and three priests of the temple on Friday, the 6th day of the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha in the Vikrama era year 1944 (1887 CE) and submitted to Śrī 5 Sarkāra through the above office. In it the signatories attest that they have not hidden any relevant data, and pledge that if later something new comes to light or details are found to have been fabricated they are ready to pay the penalty in accordance with the Ain.

The first table shows that the requested sanadas are not available in the guṭhī’s records.

The second table presents the names of the members of the trust (all from Tulāche ṭola) and the priests (all from Tulāche Vidyāpīṭhaṭola). The names of the trustees are as follows:

1. Harṣanārāṃ Ācārya

2. Kājīmāna Pīyāri

3. Bhvānī Thakuṃ Pīyāri

4. Sīdhīvīlās Khācu, son of Maṃgal Khācuka

5. Harṣa Acārjye

6. Sivanarasīṃ Pīyāri

7. Bhagatavīra

8. Jayanara Jyāpu.

The names of the priests, who performed ritual worship in the temple in monthly turns, are as follows:

1. Lālsīṃ Karmācārjye, son of Rājamān Karmācārjye

2. Harṣamān Karmācārjye

3. Kulabahādura Karmācārjye.

The left margin of the list bears signatures or fingerprints of the persons who attested the document.

The third and the fourth tables display the amount of guṭhī land and revenue from it. The guṭhī had 1 ropanī 2 javās of land, from which 7 morus 3 sukās, 1 ānā and 1 paisā worth of grain was produced annually.

The fifth table shows the annual expenditures earlier made by guṭhī members but not recorded in a sanadapatra or at a guṭhī kacaharī.

The sixth and seventh tables display calculations relating to the previous table.

The eighth table records food items and other expenditures made during feasts participated in by the temple priests and some Jyāpus. These expenses were not covered by yields on the guṭhī’s land.

The ninth table shows the total sum of expenditures.

The tenth table records food items and other expenditures made during feasts celebrated by the priests and guṭhī members after cleaning the deity’s ornaments and worshipping her on the day following the new moon.

The 11th table shows the total sum of expenditures.

Tables 12 to 14 record irregular expenditures that still needed to be covered.

In the 15th table, the document records the assets relating to the deity. The temple possessed 132 assets that were placed outside the sanctum. Of them, 108 were to be kept in guṭhī members’ houses turn by turn, while 24 were retained inside the temple. The priests of the temple—Rājamāna Karmācārjye, Harṣanārāṃ Karmācārjye and Kulabahādura Karmācārjye—were responsible for the latter items, again in monthly turns. The assets include crowns, garlands, earrings, necklaces and many other items made of gold, silver, copper or brass, some of which were decorated with diamonds (e.g. table 15, part 9, line 73). Inside the temple, there were two statues, one of the deity Tripurasundarī and the other of a king (see table 15, part 15, lines 155-157). Such items had been offered to the deity by devotees over time. The oldest listed object, a chain of sukīs made of silver, dates to the month of Caitra NS 772 (1652 CE) (table 15, part 10, line 84). A translation of the 15th table is as follows:

They are middle-sized and come with a silver wire chain with hooks [to secure them to it].1

Commentary

It is a bit strange that the Parvapūja guṭhī of the famous Tripurasundarī temple of Bhaktapur has not a single sanadapatra in its collection. It appears that the original land grant and other documents relating to the temple were at some point lost, or else that the information they contained was intentionally withheld from authorities. The inscriptions recording the donated items call the deity Tripurasundarī, Tupaju, Tupalaju, Cakreśvarī or Kulacakreśvarī. Many artifacts have inscriptions in the Newari language, many of them incorrectly transcribed by the document’s scribe.
