A pūrjī from the Guṭhī Bandobasta [Aḍḍā] of Śrī 5 Sa[rkāra] to the BhādgāuChoṭī Guṭhī Kharca [Aḍḍā] of Śrī 5 Sa[rkāra]

Uprānta: The statue of the goddess Tripurasundarī having been stolen, restitution has to be made by the temple priest (pūjāhārī), Joga Bāhādura, who was responsible for taking care of it. The articles collected by confiscating the property of the priest have been stored under the responsibility of your (lit. that) office, and a copy of the muculkā relating to the confiscation is in the Bhā[dgāu] Cho[ṭī] Jaṃgī Koṭavālī. Now that it is necessary to sell at auction the articles that are [currently] in your office, the work has been completed of providing the consenting muculkā relating to the confiscation, and writing up the appointment of I[nspector] Bhakta Bāhādura from our (lit. this) office.

Complete [now] the tasks of taking the articles from that Jaṃgī Koṭavālī [by] having soldiers from your office accompanied by I[nspector] Bhakta Bāhādura commandeer [some] bigārī labourers, carry off the articles that correspond to [the ones in] the confiscation document so that [later] nothing needs to be removed from or added to them, and dispatch them [to our office].

On …, the …rd day of Caitra in the [Vikrama] era year 1977 (1921 CE). Auspiciousness.

Commentary

The present document is related to the theft of a statue of Tripurasundarī in Bhaktapur in the night of the 28th day of Pauṣa in the Vikrama era year 1977, and is one of 15 documents, numbered by the NGMPP from K_0262_0051 to K_0262_0065, having to do with the matter. These documents were issued by the Aḍḍā Jā̃ca Śrestā Phāṭa, Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā, Guṭhī Jā̃ca Aḍḍā or Choṭī Jaṅgī Koṭavālī of Bhādgāu, or else addressed to these offices. The present document clarifies that the statue could not be found, and therefore the Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā decided to confiscate property belonging to the priest Jogabahādura Karmācārye, who was responsible for taking care of the statue, in compensation for its loss.
