Abstract

This is a copy of a document from Nainasīṃ Thāpā appointing Syāmadhara Kaṭhāyet to carry out ritual duties at Jumlā's Tripurasundarī temple and granting him the right to enjoy one pāṭhī of jhusyā from each household as remuneration.

The glorious goddess Tripurasundarī (text: Tripurāsundarī) – 1

Śrī 5 Sarkāra – 2

Hail! A letter from SubedāraNainasīṃ Thāpā

Āge: to Syāmadhara Kaṭhāyet

It is learnt that a mohara maintaining the [following] earlier practice was issued by -2- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra1 ): ''You shall enjoy 1 pāthī of jhusyā2 from each household of the subdivision [as remuneration for the ritual duty of] carrying the staff3 of -1- (i.e. the glorious goddess Tripurasundarī4 ) located in the Tripurākoṭ subdivision of Jumla district, as has been done customarily.'' Persuant to [the mohara], we, too, issue this signed appointment [letter].

Sunday, the 11th day of the bright fortnight of Phāguṇa of [Vikrama] era year 1902 (1846 CE). Auspiciousness.

Notes

1. Taken from the space above. [⇑]

2. In the standard Nepalī language, the word is spelled jhuse, a plant (Guizotia abyssinica) from whose seeds oil is extracted. [⇑]

3. It appears that a Kaṭhāyet (a clan from among the Khas Chhetri caste) was traditionally assigned the role of carrying the staff of Tripurasundarī during processions. [⇑]
