The glorious goddess Tripurasundarī (text: tripurāsundarī) –1

Śrī 5 Sarkāra – 2

Hail! A purjī from the Daphatarakhānā (text: dapataraṣānā) [overseeing] the verification of [land assignments for] the year [VS 190]9

Āge: To tharīSyāmadhara Kaṭhāyeta

It is learnt that a lālamohara was issued by -2- (i.e. Śrī 5 Sarkāra), stating: ''Following a daskata issued by SubbāRudra Sāhī in the year [VS 18]74 that states: 'Given that your ancestors1 have been carrying the staff2 of the -1- (i.e. the glorious goddess Tripurasundarī) located in the Tripurākoṭ subdivision of Jumlā district and enjoying [the surplus revenue], we declare that you shall enjoy 1 pāthī of jhusyā3 from each household of the subdivision’, we too [hereby] maintain [this arrangement]. Continue to carry the staff of the -1- (i.e. the glorious goddess Tripurasundarī) and serve [the deity] as has been done since earlier times. Heeding what the priest has ordered, enjoy the pāthīs as has been done customarily.'' Persuant to this [lālamohara], we uphold the custom and, as a result of [our] investigation, have issued a new purjī.

Sunday, the 9th day of the bright fortnight of Śrāvaṇa of [Vikrama] era year 1909 (1852 CE). Auspiciousness.

Commentary

For more information about the temple of Tripurasundarī, see the Commentary of K_0093_0002C.

Notes

1. Lit. barājyūdeṣi, since the time of your great-grandfather. []

2. This implies that a Kaṭhāyeta (a Khas Chhetri caste) had the role of carrying the staff of Tripurasundarī, which represents the deity’s power, which in turn ensures the king’s power, during processions. []

3. An alternative spelling of jhuse, a particular type of herb (Guizotia abyssinica) from whose seeds oil is extracted. See NBŚ jhuse-tila. []

4. . This number was added when the copy was checked for its agreement with the original. []

5. Probably an abbreviation for nāyaba rāiṭara (assistant writer). []

6. This numeral by a second hand was probably added when documents were either sorted or, more likely, when they were microfilmed. []
