A ledger recording the revenue and expenditures of the guṭhī of the Tripurāsundarī [temple] located at Koṭthoka, Kharīmaujā, Dhading, West no. 1

Guṭhī Lagata Jāca Aḍḍā of Śrī 5 Sarkāra
A ledger recording the revenue and expenditures of the guṭhī of the Tripurāsundarī [temple] located at Koṭthoka, Kharī maujā, Dhading, West no. 1
Uprāṃta: “Regarding the decision to prepare a record of revenue and expenditures of the guṭhī of the Tripurāsundarī [temple] located at Koṭthoka, Kharī maujā, Dhading, West no. 1, [we found], when we studied the [previous] reports that the Guṭhī Lagata of Śrī 5 Sarkāra apprised [us] of, [that] a witnessed written statement given by the priest [and] tha[rī]Rudravīra Rānā Magar in [Vikrama era year] 2002.08.19 records that [the guṭhī had] 18 [murīs] of unhusked rice [as the production] of a total of 56 [murīs] of kheta, and 1 rupee [as the revenue] from pākho land; from that revenue, total expenses [amounting to] 47 ru[paiyās], 81 [paisās], 1 [dāma] are recorded for [sacrificial] he-buffaloes and goats for regular worship and worship during Baḍā Dasaĩ, Caite Dasaĩ and other festivals. In the original signed records of [Vikrama era years] 1860, 1903 and 1912 and from the moṭha [records] of the [Vikrama] era year [19]25, it is seen that 20 [murīs] of land was maintained as an emolument for the priest and 20 muris as the emolument for the kaṭuvāla, and the remaining 16 [murīs] of field was for the worship of the goddess. A written statement comprising the testimonies of witnesses at the contested site (sarjiminmuculkā) [and that went] through district authorities also records that for the regular worship of the goddess Tripurāsundarī, as performed according to previous records, the priest Bhānubhakta Pādhyā Pokharyāla enjoys 6 [murīs] of unhusked rice from the 20 [murīs] of kheta, and the kaṭuvālaLāṭā Sārkī enjoys 6 [murīs] of unhusked rice from the 20 [murīs] of kheta. For the regular worship of Tripurāsundarī Māī, 6 [murīs] of unhusked rice from the production of the 16 [murīs] of kheta is utilized, according to the records. On the pākho land which the fourteen tharīs enjoy, 1 goat is paid in lieu of 1 rupaiyā as sermā during Baḍā Dasaĩ and Caite Dasaĩ. Regarding the flower garden plot, [someone] has been enjoying it and offering service to the temple by smearing and anointing the temple and making dunās and ṭaparīs 2 [during festivals]. If the land is to be taxed, then it should be taxed 4 [paisās], equal to the eighth part [of the plot’s total production]. It is recorded, also within the witnessed written statement (muculkā), that if the land is to be taxed then one should not be obliged to serve in the temple by smearing, anointing and taking care of it.” Therefore, we make known, following suggestions [made in the previous] report, that [revenue and expense] rates need to be fixed for the regular service in accordance with the details [below], namely that regarding the [expenses of] Baḍā Dasaĩ, Caite Dasaĩ and [other] festivals, worship is to be performed with guṭhī [revenue] and with the tharīs of the village managing tasks. It is in view of this situation that, regarding [revenue from] the pākho land, 1 goat has [hitherto] been given in lieu of 1 mo[hara]ru[paiyā]; however, 1 moru should be established [as the permanent form of payment]. Were the tax on the flower garden made permanent, service would not be provided to the goddess; therefore the flower garden plot needs to be maintained and to have fruit plants and flowers planted [on it] to be offered to the deity.
When, under the decision [and] in line with the details of the report, 18 [in words] eighteen murīs of unhusked rice as the production on 56 [in words] fifty-six murīs of kheta and 1 [in words] one moru in cash as the emolument for the priest and kaṭuvāla, are reduced by the [expenses] of the regular worship—13 [murīs], 19 [pāthīs], 1 [mānā] of unhusked rice—the remaining unhusked rice of 4 [murīs], 7 [mānās] at 9 [paisās per pāthī] would be [equivalent to] 8 [rupaiyās], 98 [paisās], 2 [dāmas], and adding in the 1 moru in cash makes altogether morus 9।98।2 [in words] nine rupees, ninety-eight paisās, two dāmas. When the expenses, morus 8।21।1 [in words] eight rupees, twenty-one paisās, 1 dāma, are subtracted, the remainder is moru 1।77।1 [in words] one rupee, seventy-seven paisās, one dāma, which needs to be entered in the record of revenue and expenditures. Regarding the guṭhī, a sanada has been issued in the name of the priest, directing that the revenue and expenditures be entered at the above-mentioned fixed rate, and the surplus [revenue] be submitted to the māla starting from the [Vikrama era year] 2003.

When on Thursday, the 9th day of Phāgun 2003 the Nepāla Pāhāḍa Rīpoṭa Nīkasārī submitted the report stating: “We found appropriate the suggestions of the report that recommended that a purjī be issued by the [Guṭhī Lagata Jāca] Aḍḍā to the māla to follow up on whether the tasks are being performed well or not in terms of spending the collected kasara at the fixed rate. Your wish is our command,” it was sanctioned with the large stamp of Śrī 3 Māhārāja3 and the mark of the venerable Commander-in-Chief. Following that KharidāraDīrghamāna Josī from Yeṭkhā and nā[yaba]su[bbā]Maṃgala Bāhādura Śreṣṭa from Bhatacapāla submitted [the present document] to the Guṭhī Bandovasta Aḍḍā of Śrī 5 Sarkāra and prepared the ledger, recording the revenue and expenditures and the guṭhī’s remaining surplus revenue, as recorded in the following details. The temple of Tripurāsundarī referred to in this document is located at Salyānkoṭ hilltop in Tripurasundari VDC, Dhading district. The goddess is also called Salyānakoṭakī Māī or Śrīmāī. There are three god-houses of the deity in this area: two on the hilltop and the third one in the lowland (besī) setting of Hā̃se village in Aginchok VDC. In Maṅsira, a big procession starts from the hilltop carrying the locality’s idol of the goddess. From Maṅsira onwards, for around five months, she lives in her lowland house. On the day of Caite Daśain she returns in a similar procession to her village house. From the first to the 14th day of Baḍā Daśain the goddess lives in the eastern house on the hilltop, while in the remaining time from Caitra to Maṅsira she lives in the western one.
The Śāha kings of Nepal worshipped Tripurāsundarī as their lineage deity. King Pūrṇa Śāha (r. 1570-1605) of Gorkha had made arrangements for worship in this temple (Panta 2041: 69). In VS 1785, Visrāma Rānā, a man of rank in the Gorkhā kingdom, donated one nagarā, one trumpet (turahī) and one metal plate (thaliyā) to the deity after getting permission from the king (Panta 2045: 851). The Divyopadeśa, a collection of teachings by King Pṛthvīnārāyaṇa Śāha, mentions that before the expansion of his kingdom towards the east he worshipped the Salyānkoṭ goddess and obtained blessings from her (Panta 2043: 508).
A copperplate inscription and the attendant lālamohara issued by King Gīrvāṇayuddha endowing lands to keep up the traditions related to the deity have been published (Vajrācārya and Śreṣtha VS 2037: 552–558, and DNA_0013_0023). The deity mentioned in these documents as Khãḍādevī is none other than the Tripurāsundarī who is rightly identified by G. Vajrācārya and Ṭ. Śreṣṭha Vajrācārya and Śreṣtha VS 2037: 555) as the goddess of Salyānkoṭ.
