Commentary

The document suggests that the land endowed to the Tripureśvara Temple under the guṭhi tenure included a pond (pokhari) located in Tundikhel or else that the pond was administered under another arrangement but could be used for the temple's ritual purposes. It appears that this pond no longer exists, as no other ponds besides Rani Pokhari can currently be identified in or near the Tundikhel area. According to the temple's current priest, the temple had a pond in the location of today's Dasharatha stadium, which used to be the southernmost section of Tundikhel (https://kvuhp.nepalpicturelibrary.org/resource/tales-from-tundikhel/). K_0013_0025B, dated VS 1874, mentions a lotus pond within Tundikhel, but it is unclear whether this refers to the pond mentioned in the present document.

Notes

1. It is unknown what the abbreviation and the number refer to. It is likely they were added when the copies were checked for their agreement with the originals. []

2. This number refers to the place of the document in the government ledger archived as Pā[hāḍa] Baṃ[dobasta] Ta[habila Phā̃ṭa] 1, whose entries were microfilmed sequentially by the NGMPP from K_0001_0020 (front cover and index) up to K_0004_0033. For more details see K_0004_0003A. []

3. In the text: kamala pokharī. It is possible that kamala (lotus) is not only descriptive here but was the actual name of the pond. []

4. The term refers to a type of levy (cf. M.C. Regmi 1975 (No.4): 62 and M.C. Regmi 1982 (No.3-4): 54), though its exact nature remains unclear. []

5. It is unclear what the term māla (NBŚ-māla: goods, articles, property) stands for here. It may refer to the goods provided through a rakama tenure, such as pottery articles or charcoal production. For an extensive list of rakama goods and services, see M.C. Regmi 1975: 154-155. []

6. The seal marks the end of the page in the ledger. During the documentation process, this and the following folio were microfilmed in one frame. []

7. This refers to the folio number within the bundle. []

8. This is the signature of the person who probably oversaw the scribes in copying. []

9. The reading is uncertain. It probably refers to a name of a person or a place. []

10. The reading is uncertain. It probably refers to a name of a person or a place. []
