Abstract

In this list are recorded details of the buffalo sacrifices performed at the main courtyard (Mūlacoka) of the royal palace on the 8th, 9th and 14th of the bright fortnight of the month of Āśvina in VS 1908 (1851 CE) during the autumnal Dasaĩ festival.

Commentary

The list tabulates the buffalo sacrifices performed at the Mūlacoka (lit. "main courtyard") of the royal palace on the 8th, 9th and 14th lunar days of the bright fortnight of Āśvina, during the autumnal Dasaĩ festival. Similar documents exist for the years VS 1886 (E_2776_0001), 1888 (E_2767_0049), 1900 (E_2775_0040) and 1902 (E_2779_0019, E_2764_0036). Among these the present list is the most extensive one, covering sacrifices on three different lunar days and also giving total summations for the expended buffaloes.

Notes

1. That the list refers to sacrifices at the Hanumānḍhokā palace can be inferred from the fact that many of the documents microfilmed on the same and neighbouring reels concern affairs relating to the old royal palace of Kathmandu. [⇑]

2. Here as in all places below, the number to denote the weekday is left out. While in the present place no space has been left to fill in this number, on top of the lists referring to the sacrifices on the 9th and 14th days below such empty space is found. [⇑]

3. This must refer to those buffaloes that are sacrificed on the occasion of Kālarātri in front of the image of the goddess Taleju by Newar ritual specialists, not by beheading but by slitting the carotid artery so that blood splashes in direction of the blood-receivers who stand left and right of the goddess' temple (see Zotter 2021: 211–212). Note that the names of the sacrificers remain unrecorded and these buffalo sacrifices are only mentioned in this summary. [⇑]

4. This must refer to Bam Bahādura Kũvara Rāṇā, at that time the second Rāṇā brother in line after Jaṅga Bahādūra. In a document from VS 1910 (1853 CE), two years after the present document, Bam Bahādura is called commander-in-chief general, while his elder brother is referred to as the prime minister and commander-in-chief general (K_0356_0042).
