Abstract

This is a sales deed deed executed by Kāsinātha Cāpāgāī of Dhuni Byāsi involving a male slave, aged 24, priced at 150 mohararupaiyās.

Synopsis

This is a sales deed executed by Kāsinātha Cāpāgāi, a resident of Dhuni Byāsi and a Subedāra of the Mahīndradala Palṭana1 . He sells his 24-year-old slave Kāle to MahantaKulamāna Giri, a resident of Sāgācoka Village for 150 mohararupaiyā̃s. An earnest payment (gaurāi) of 1 mohararupaiyā̃ is included in the amount. The document lists three witnesses in the left margin, namely Dhanavira Buḍhā Chetrī, Dala Bahādura Khatrī Chetrī and Karnavira Khatrī Chetrī. Karnavira also scribed the document. The document is dated Wednesday, the 8th day of the dark fortnight of Bhādra of the [Vikrama] era year 1952 (1895 CE).


Commentary

Mahanta Kulamāna Giri is also mentioned in documents K_0348_0039 and K_0348_0040, regarding a bond servant of his, and in K_0348_0043, regarding pledging of a slave to him.

1. The Mahīndradala Palṭana of the Nepal Army was established in January 1845 (1st of Māgha, VS 1901) during the reign of King Rājendra. In the early Rāṇā period, it was given the responsibility of managing munitions at the Topakhānā. After the restructuring of the Nepalese military in 1952, it was called the Mahīndradala Battalion (Vaidya et al. 2009: 293-296). []
