Śrī Jaṅganaṃdaprakāśeśvara – 3

Śrī Purṇeśvara – 2

Śrī 3 Sarkāra – 1

Hail! A purjī of the venerable Commander-in-Chief General Bhīma Samsera Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā3 , a venerable prince born of a prince, to the chief and clerk(s) of the Guṭhī Kharca Aḍḍā under [Śrī 3 Sarkāra]4

Uprānta: It is tradition that by customary practice the [Śrī Purṇeśvara]5 kitchen (pākaśālā) has received gelded goats worth 24 mohararupaiyā̃s (text: moharu) and 3 morus for ghee and spice(s)—in total 27 moharus—from the Guṭhī Kharca Aḍḍā for observing Baḍādasaĩ [with a feast] for the poor who take their meals (lit. "cooked rice") there. Therefore, for celebrating the Baḍādasaĩ of this year, [19]67, as usual gelded goats worth 24 moharus have been granted and 3 moharus for ghee and spice(s), in total 27—[in words,] twenty-seven—moharus for the poor who take their meals at that kitchen, [Śrī Purṇeśvara]6 . After recording the expenditures in the account book (syāhā) of the [Śrī Jaṅganaṃdaprakāśeśvara]7 guṭhī, carry out the task of delivering [the money] into the hands of Lāla Bahādura, the diṭṭhā of the [Śrī Purṇeśvara]8 kitchen. It will be deducted, when accounts are cleared, according to the account book and receipt, [both of them] signed and stamped by the said diṭṭhā.

Sunday, the 3rd solar day (gate) of Āśvina in the [Vikrama era] year 1967 (1910 CE). Auspiciousness.

Commentary

This order to disburse funds for festive meals at a public kitchen on the occasion of the autumnal Dasaĩ festival follows earlier similar documents almost verbatim (see K_0614_0041, K_0660_0052, K_0664_0017). It was the last in the series to order the purchase of gelded goats and spices. In later years, yoghurt and sweets were bought with the same funds. As the follow-up document K_0488_0012, issued a month after the present one, shows, even in VS 1967, contrary to the present order, yoghurt and sweets were being served instead of meat.

Notes

1. This number was added by a later hand, probably when the documents were microfilmed, using Arabic numerals. It refers to the position of the document in the bundle (pokā) number 8 Pan no. 1 (cf. registration number on the catalogue card), extending from K_0487_0024 (no. 1) to K_0489_0031 (no. 139). All documents in the batch are dated VS 1967 and were issued by Bhīma Śamśera. Many of them were copied by the same person who copied the present one. []

2. Although due to an overexposure of the negative the legend on the seal cannot be read, it is likely to be that of Narotamadhara, the person who verified the copy. []

3. In contrast to the earlier documents in the batch, Bhīma Śamśera's last name is here given as "Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā" instead of "Jaṅga Rāṇā Bahādura". This change was introduced in an order issued by Bhīma Śamśera at the behest of Prime Minister Candra Śamśera command on 24 Mārga VS 1966 (11 November 1909) (Regmi 1984: 14). []
