Legal complaint (jāherīpatra)
Āge: Born in Chegāṃ Gāũ in Syāra in the Aṭhāra Saya [Kholā region] and currently a resident of the same village, Tenjīn Bhoṭe, about 28 years old, caused injustice to me in the month of Vaiśākha this year, [19]63 (1906 CE); I cannot remember the day and date. While the group of 11 of us were returning home after an exchange involving salt, we [paused and] were having a bite to eat, near a water [source] at a place called Ghocu below the aforementioned Chegāṃ Gāũ1 . At that time, the said Tenjīn Bhoṭe came towards us and began grabbing at my khukurī.
And as I did not allow [him] to snatch my khukurī, the said Bhoṭe picked up a stone, [and] with that stone inflicted on my right arm 1 wound 1 aṃgula in width and 3 aṃgulas in length that would heal in 35 days, and a[nother] wound at the joint of my right thigh that would heal in 35 days, leaving a bruise. He assaulted me without any reason [and] grabbed at and snatched the khukurī from my waist. [While] he was assaulting and manhandling me, the others ran uphill in fear. Chīmel Ghale happened to …2 and the said Bhoṭe also inflicted 2 wounds on the cheek of the said Chīmel Ghale by punching him and 1 wound by hitting him on the head. [He] forcibly snatched away belongings of mine [worth] 2.41 mohararupaiyā̃s in total [comprising] …3 of my khukurī worth 1.4 mohararupaiyā̃s, and 1 flint striker worth 0.12 [mohararupaiyā̃s], 1 khukurī worth 1 mohararupaiyā̃ [and] 1 sheath worth 0.25 mohararupaiyā̃, while also inflicting wounds and bruises at many places by physically assaulting and manhandling [me]. Unwilling to accept and unable to bear [this], I have come to file a complaint at this amāla.
The unprovoked roadside assault [on me]—I who did no wrong to the said Tenjīn Bhoṭe—and the seizure and retention of my above-mentioned belongings is not something I can stand for. Have the khukurī of the said Tenjīn, which the said Chīmel took, be retrieved from the latter, and the value of the belongings of mine mentioned [above] be compensated by the said Tenjīn Bhoṭe through this amāla. If others' belongings are looted by use of force—assaulting and inflicting wounds and bruises—have Tenjīn Bhoṭe receive punishment in accordance with the Ain. I shall bear and pay [the penalty] as a wrongdoer in accordance with the Ain if the above statements do not prove [to be true].
