Arjī

Uprānta: [Your Majesty] must [by now] be aware of further details from the arjī that was sent earlier. An[other] arjī [and] a letter sent by Kājī Raṇajora Thāpā2 from Nahāna3 through an ascetic, asked to take it using an alternate route because the postal service was not functioning owing to the blockade of the main route (ghāṭo) by the British, [have since] arrived. The arjī, which was being dispatched to Your Majesty, was sent on. You will have [by now] learned the details in them from the arjī. A copy of the letter written to me was also dispatched. You will be familiar with it [too].

From Nahāna, the ascetic made it to Kũvara Kaptāna4 at Nālāpānī. An arjī sent by the Kaptāna was also sent on [to Your Majesty]. The details relating to Nālāpānī will [by now] be known to you from Kũvara Kaptāna's arjī. In a letter [of his] to me is the estimated number of enemies killed or injured during the battle on the 2nd and 3rd of the dark fortnight of Kārttika. As learned from our secret agent (āphnā peṭakā, lit. 'of our own belly') among the British troops, 1 general, 1 colonel, 1 major, 150 white soldiers and 200 black (i.e., native) soldiers of the British were killed. The number of injured remains unknown. The news was brought that [the messenger] had heard of 1,000 to 1,200 men being put out of action, [a figure] including those killed or injured.

[Balabhadra] wrote [requesting us] to send materiel, [including] poison, arrows, and flint. We sent gunpowder, ammunition, flint, poison, arrows, and some rifles, as available here, through Kājī Revanta Kũvara. Since there was not much here, the amount sent was small. Kājī Revanta Kũvara, too, was ordered to keep going day and night. We also lost some of our men when they sallied forth from the fort to attack. I have written to Kũvara Kaptāna not to sally forth to attack. [The same] order has been sent to Kũvara Kājī5 . In [the battle of] Nālāpānī too, the attack was carried out after sallying forth, and a subedāra was among those killed, so that these days the troops seem to have thinned out.

Saturday, the 1st of the bright fortnight of Kārtika in the [Vikrama] era year 1871 (1814 CE). Residence: Almora. Auspiciousness.

Salutations, salutations, salutations of Bam Śāha. Auspiciousness.
