Commentary

This order allocates provisions for the rituals of the autumnal Dasaĩ to different ascetic institutions in Kathmandu and Deopatan which all operated under the Jaṅgānandaprakāśeśvara Guṭhi (for more on this guṭhī, see the Commentaries to K_0476_0060 and K_0636_0036).

There is a similar order issued five days prior to the present one and copied immediately after the present copy of it (K_0384_0066); it provides two other akhāḍās operating under the same guṭhīVairāgīs the one and Daśanāmīs the other—with a sum of 25 rupees each, i.e. with sums three to eight times higher than what was allocated under the present order. In earlier years, the Vairāgī akhāḍā had received as much as 100 rupees on the occasion of the Badā Dasaĩ (K_0382_0036, K_0384_0065). Later the two separate orders were merged (see K_0394_0028 issued in VS 1974).

Notes

1. This number in the upper left corner of the document is the page number of the ledger in which the document was copied. []

2. This number was added by a later hand using Arabic numerals. It refers to the position of the document in the bundle (pokā) number 9 of the Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā. For more on this number, see note 1 in the edition of K_0395_0049. []

3. Inserted from the space numbered 1 above. []

4. Inserted from the space numbered 2 above. The institution in question is the Jaṅgānandaprakāśeśvara Guṭhī. []

5. This must refer to the akhāḍā of the Udāsīs, which is one of four akhāḍās at Kālamocanaghāṭ said to have been built by Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā, the other three being a Nātha akhāḍā (see next entry in the list), a Vairāgī and a Daśanāmī akhāḍā (https://dreamcities.org/places/akhada/); on Dasaĩ provisions for the latter two, see K_0384_0066 and the Commentary below. []

6. This must be the Nātha akhāḍā at Kālamocanaghāṭ, which is one of the four akhāḍās built by Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā (see the previous footnote). []

7. Inserted from the space numbered 4 above. []

8. This refers to the akhāḍā of the vairāgīs in the Rāma temple compound within the Paśupatinātha temple complex (Michaels and Tandan 1994: 37 no. 9, 58–59 no. 17). []

9. Inserted from the space numbered 3 above. []

10. This must refer to the akhāḍā of the Udāsīs at Paśupatinātha near the temple of Rājarājeśvarī, which is also known as Nirmalā Akhāḍā (Michaels and Tandan 1994: 37 no. 8, 62 no. 28). []

11. This might refer to the Nānaka maṭhas at Paśupatinātha's Bhasmeśvaraghāṭ (Michaels and Tandan 1994: 60 nos. 7, 8) []

12. This may be referring to the Nānaka Maṭha near the Bālāju bridge, though the description as viṣnumatipārī, "across the Viṣṇumati River", signals a location on the far side of the river. []

13. The seal that goes along with the name of the kharidāra bears Bhavaprasāda's name as a legend, the syllable pra being framed by a hexagon of two intersecting triangles. []
