Synopsis

On the 5th1 of the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha in NS 878 (1758 CE), the phalcā in front of the stone water spout at Su Bāhāḥ (text: Śrakvabāhāra) was renovated under the sponsorship of Kāsirāma Bhābo, Māladeva Bhābo, Puyirāma Bhābo, Kammadeva Bhābo, Bhāgīdeva Bhābo, Rakṣarāma Bhābo, Puṃdeva Bhābo, Sidhisiṃha Bhābo, Ādisiṃha Bhābo, Tavadhika Bhābo, Bhāgīsiṃha Bhābo, Parideo Bhābo, Bhāginātha Bhābo, Māsiṃdeva Bhābo, Bābusiṃha Bhābo, Dhaṃntasiṃha Bhābo, Dhantasiṃha Bhābo [all residents living along] the lāchi and Rakṣmīśaṅkara Bhābo and Dhanasiṃha Bhābo of Su Bāhāḥ (text: Śakvabāhāra). If the phalcā is damaged in the future, it is to be restored after consultation [among the above-mentioned persons]. Mahādeva (text: Mādeo) is specified as the guardian of the phalcā.

Commentary

Bhābo is a term used to denote Jyāpus, the Newar peasant caste. Therefore, it is clear that the Jyāpu community who inhabited Su Bāhāḥ ṭola surrounding the bāhāḥ complex were responsible for the renovation. Although this inscription is currently stored inside the bāhāḥ sanctum, it originally formed part of the phalcā that overlooks the Su Bāhāḥ water spout (hiti; text: yiti) to the east of the bāhāḥ.

Notes

1. The day appears to be the fifth, but the figure is somewhat illegible. []
