Obeisance to glorious Gaṇeśa! Whatever embellishments offered to Matsyendra[-nātha] by [my] father2 that have become worn, have now been removed by me, [his] son. I offer a [new] golden idol of Vajrasattva and a precious five-faced nāga made of silver. Today, Tuesday, in the dark fortnight of Mādhava3 in the Śāka era year 1801 in the Īśvara Saṃvatsara,4 Padma Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā Varmā, the son of a king, has delivered embellishments and the like to the god for the fulfilment of his own desires.

Commentary

This is one of three votive inscriptions by members of the Rāṇā family on the pinnacle (Nev. cunāmvaḥ) of the Buṅgadyaḥ chariot, the other two being NHDP_0001_0141 and NHDP_0001_0142. The inscription is documented by NHDP as LAL0041_I_010 and the object as LAL0001-023 under LAL0001. The identity of the two objects mentioned is not clear. The golden Vajrasattva idol might be the one referred to in NHDP_0001_0142 and documented by NHDP as LAL0001-024. However, this object was offered by Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā's wife Kīrti Bhakti Kumārī Devī and their son Ḍamvara Jaṅga Bahādūra Rāṇā, and not by Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā himself. The whereabouts of the silver nāga have not been traced so far.

Notes

1. The reason for supplied text is not damage to the text, but rather surface features of the object that cover the text on the digital images this edition is based on. []

3. That is, Vaiśākha. []

4. This saṃvatsara (= 1877–78 CE) does not match with the given Śāka era year 1801 (= 1879 CE). Bahudhānya Saṃvatsara would have been correct. []
