A purjī from the Munsīkhānā to the Pustakakhānā
Uprānta: Professor Sylvain Lévi previously requested Śrī 3 Mahārāja to have a copy of the Mañjuśrī-vyākaraṇa made, [which request] was sent on, but there is no book of that title. Śrī 3 Mahārāja has [since] sent word [to us] that there is [a copy] of the book titled Śabdalakṣaṇa-vyākaraṇa. Inside the book there is a piece [of paper] on which ''Mañjuśrī-vyākaraṇa'' is written in the handwriting of the said professor. [The professor] put a request to Śrī 3 Mahārāja that he quickly wanted to receive a copy of the first and the last folios of the Śabdalakṣaṇa-vyākaraṇa [manuscript] in order to compare it with the translated version made from the Tibetan language (bhoṭe bolī) and [so] to determine whether the Śabdalakṣaṇa-vyākaraṇa and the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa are the same or not. For that reason, [Śrī 3 Mahārāja] has ordered that the copy be made soon. It would be good if it can be sent quickly and that the assigned copy can be received [here] on time.
On Monday the 30th of the [Vikrama] era year 1989 (1933 CE).
The Mañjuśrī-vyākaraṇa is a grammar that follows the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa and to a lesser extent the Kātantra-vyākaraṇa (Verhagen 1994: 202). Śabdalakṣaṇa-vyākaraṇa is another name for the Cāndra-vyākaraṇa composed by Candragomin (Timalsina 2018: 1). The present document bears witness to Sylvain Lévi's desire to confirm whether the two are in fact one and the same or not. Since the month of this document is not mentioned, it cannot be easily known to which prime minister the letter from Lévi was addressed, whether to Juddha Śamśera, who assumed power in August 1932, or to his predecessor, Bhīma Śamśera (Amatya 2004: 105). The calendar of the year shows that only the month of Phālguṇa has Monday on the 30th day. Therefore, it can be confirmed that this document was prepared on 30th of Phālguṇa and that the prime minister mentioned on the document is Juddha Śamśera.
