Dila Mohana and Herā Śobhā Tāmrākāra and their family, who live in Cakrabahila, Patan, ward no. 12, offered this copper roof [for the palanquin] on the sixth of the bright fortnight of Maṅsīra in the Nepāla era year 1137 (2016 CE). One who helped in making this roof is Premakṛṣṇa Tāmrākāra from [the area around the] Kothujhochẽ [caitya] at Hauga [monastery]. Auspiciousness! Refuge to thrice glorious Macchindranātha! Rameśa and Saritā Maharjana, who sponsored the gilding of the roof, [are from] Pilāchẽ, Patan, ward 7.

Commentary

The inscription is engraved on the outside of the upturned edges of the roof of the palanquin (New. khata) of Buṅgadyaḥ. Another inscription, recording the donation of other parts of the palanquin components in NS 1141 (2021 CE) by several of the persons mentioned here, is engraved on a gilt copper panel affixed to the apron of the palanquin (see NHDP_0001_0169). This implies that the roof was replaced earlier than the rest of the palanquin. The palanquin is mainly used on the following occasions: carrying the deity from the temple in Buṅgamatī to Taḥ Bāhāḥ, from Taḥ Bāhāḥ to Lagankhel for the bathing ceremony (mahāsnāna) and back to Taḥ Bāhāḥ, from Taḥ Bāhāḥ to Pulchowk (where it is placed on the chariot) and, once the chariot procession is completed, from Jawalakhel to Buṅgamatī.
