[Donated by the] Venerable Bābu Siṃha Maharjana and his family [on the occasion of] the pañcadāna [festival]1 in Yala, on Monday the 32nd solar day and the eighth [lunar day] (aṣṭamī) [of the bright fortnight] of Śrāvaṇa in the [Vikrama era] year 2078.

Commentary

The inscription is engraved on the base of a pinnacle of a baldachin erected over a pīṭha at Pulchowk where the chariot is assembled, the deity is mounted onto the chariot and the procession commences (Locke 1973, 26).

Notes

1. The pañcadāna festival is celebrated in Patan in the month of Śrāvaṇa on the day of aṣṭamivrata, a monthly ritual for Bodhisattva Amoghapāśa Lokeśvara. During this festival lay people offer gifts to priests in remembrance of the gifts offered to the Dīpaṃkara Buddha, which according to tradition happened on this day of the year (Locke 1980, 234). []
