Synopsis

The inscription opens with praise of the Buddha, followed by a Sanskrit eulogy of King Surendra Vikrama Śāha.

The family of the venerable Jagamunī, senior member of Sūrya Vaṃtā Mahāvihāra—namely his wife Padmalakṣmī; the late Dhaṃmunī and his wife Tejamati; the late Parśamunī and his wife Thakūṃni; Dhaṃcāmuni and his wife Bhūjñānī Thakun; Caṃdaramunī and Siddhilakṣmī; Dhijadhaṃmunī’s eldest grandson Śaktī and his wife Thakun; as well as Kālīdāsa, Kalyāṇa, Ratnamunī, Siṃghamunī, Hermunī, Siddhamunī, Āsāmadu, Cakramunī, and Chatramunī—established a gilded copper icon of the venerable Kvācapāladeva of Sūryaoṃta Mahāvihāra on the eleventh day of the bright fortnight of the lunar month of Phālguṇa, a Friday, in NS 977 (1857), when the Sun was in Virgo and the Moon in Gemini. The inscription concludes with a benediction for auspiciousness.

The income from two ropanīs of land in Aphara is designated for the annual worship (busādhana). Five senior members (nāyoju) of Oṃta Vahāra are to be provided food. The cakreśvara (senior monk) of the monastery is required to recite the Svayaṃbhū Purāṇa, and a Gubhāju priest is to recite the Aparamitā. Responsibility for maintaining the endowment is assigned to four individuals: Dhaṃcāmuni, Candramunī, Dhijadhaṃmunī, and Kālīdāsa.

The stanza in Sanskrit was composed by Srīcaṃdra, the worshipper of the Buddha, and the artisan Viradhana served as the “abode of Viśvakarma” (Viśvakarmādhivāsakaḥ) in executing the work.
