kipaṭa

Notes var. kīpaṭa; n. a form of traditional land tenure, where communal authority overrides state authority and control over the land is exercised on the basis of family and clan group (cf. Regmi 1965: 82), traditionally practiced by several ethnic groups, particularly in eastern Nepal among the Kiranti groups (Whelpton 2005: 262).
