mādala

Notes n. a kind of hand made drum. This drum is used mainly for rhythm-keeping in Nepalese folk music. The Mādala consists of a cylindrical body with a slight bulge at its center and heads at both ends, one head larger than the other. The Sarkīs who has been classified as members of the Untouchable caste in the Mulukī Ain (MA-54.160.17) used to have the profession of making such drum using dead animal's skins.
