Notes [S.] Order or stage of live. In traditional Brahmanical thought their are four āśramas which a twice-born male is supposed to adopt in sequence during his life-time: brahmacārin (celibate student), gṛhastha (householder), vānaprastha (forest hermit) and saṃnyāsin (renouncer).
