pichāhi

Notes var. pichāi; n. 1) a tax levied in a newly conquered area (M.C. Regmi 1975: 202), probably from pichā (cf. Turner 1931: s.v. pichā = refuge, shelter; pichā parnu = to surrender, to submit; pichā linu = to take under one's protection); 2) in gharahi-pichahi, a levy collected from each household in Kumaon (M.C. Regmi 1988: 104).
