Hail! A document written by SubedāraŚaṅkhadhara, the dvāryā of
Patan.
Age: to Rāmānanda Paṇḍita Bā̃ḍā. It is learned that the
Luthāma Guṭha [indeed] belongs to you. In persuance of the mohara1 , I have granted you the bahāli2 [document]. Continue the profession of your
ancestors, follow the śiristā3 as
established by your ancestors, and make use of the rice fields and harvest4
belonging to your Luthāma Guṭha.
Tuesday5 , the 5th of
the bright fortnight of Āśvina in the [Vikrama] era year 1860 (1803 CE).
Auspiciousness.
Commentary
This document identifies Subedāra Śaṅkhadhara as a dvāryā. By
contrast, documents E_2253_0015C and E_2253_0015D call him an amālī. The present designation probably was a mistake on the part of the
scribe. Also, unlike other documents in this set, Rāmānanda is designated as a
paṇḍita here. It was a title granted first to his ancestor
Jayamuni during the reign of Sadāśiva Malla (see NBhV 19/2.102, Bajracharya/Michaels 2015/1: 103).
Notes
1. This refers to document
E_2253_0015C, a
rukkā issued by the king earlier in the month of
Bhādra.
[⇑] 2. I.e., the document that put the overseership of the
guṭha into
the hands of Rāmānanda.
[⇑] 3. Meaning unclear. In
document
E_2253_0015A, this word has been used to denote the Śreṣṭhas, a high
caste among Newars. This meaning, however, does not seem to apply here.
[⇑] 4. ālibāli, lit. a ridge of the rice field
(
ālī) and the harvest (
bālī).
