The lālamohara of which the present document is a copy was issued by King Rājendra in the name of Rūpanātha Gosāī̃ on Monday, the 14th of the dark fortnight of Māgha in the [Vikrama] era year 1878 (1822 CE).1 It reconfirms a birtā land grant in Pyādā in the former realm of the king of Salyan (text: Sallyānā) after it had been examined and confirmed by inspectors (jā̃cakī) a decade earlier, in VS 1867 (1810 CE)2 The birtā consists of a plot of wet cropland (kheta), elevated dry cropland (ḍihī) and the barren lowlands (bhābara) adjoining them. The addressee is to dutifully conceive the birtā [as his] and enjoy [its fruits]. Measurements are not given.
The document is part of a series of confirmations Mahanta Rūpanātha received from King Rājendra in 1820 and the following years (see Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461f.).
Naraharinātha's edition also records the signatures that are on the backside of the original, according to which the lālamohara was channelled through (mārphat) Raṇodyata (for Raṇodyota) Sāha, Dalabhaṃjana Pāmḍe, Prāṇa Sāha, Jagajīta Paṇḍe, Bhīmasena Thāpā, Bhaktavīra Thāpā, Udaye Gīrī and Mahāvīra Adhikārī (all names are spelled as in Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461).
The copy edited here belongs to a batch of copies that was probably prepared in 1907 (VS 1964) to be sent along with a petition (bintīpatra) submitted by Lokanātha, one of Rūpanātha's later successors, to Kathmandu (see K_0469_0033). Parallel passages in the other copies allow the partly unreadable name of the person who signed the document at the right margin above the main text to be reconstructed as Dyotīprasāda. Elsewhere in the batch, the note at the left margin, faded in the present document, states that the copy is attested as correct by Mahanta Chatranāthajī's disciple, Lokanāthajī (cf. e.g. K_0469_0018).
