[Main text:]
Hail. [This is] an executive order of the supreme king of great kings.
Āge: To Rūpanātha
The lālamohara stating: "We have exempted the land granted as
birtās to your guru Bhagavantanātha by [our ancestor]5 from all revenue payments
(rakama)" was burnt when your monastery (maṭha) was damaged. You have complained about this issue to Captain (kaptāna) Narasiṃha Thāpā, and [it]
came to our notice. On the birtā land that traditionally was
exempted from all revenue payments before, we [hereby] grant exemption from all
revenue payments from now on as well. Dutifully enjoy [your privilege].
Monday, the 7th of dark fortnight of Kārttika of the [Vikrama] era year 1886 (1829
CE)6 .
Auspiciousness.
Commentary
The present document is the only source so far found mentioning that the
maṭha was damaged (by fire?).
In VS 1897 (1840 CE), King Rājendra issued a
lālamohara informing different civil and military office
holders that all landholdings of the maṭha, both
birtās and bā̃dhās, were being exempted
from all revenue payments (see Naraharinātha VS 2022: 462
and K_0469_0028).
Notes
1. This archival note indicates the card number (of bundle 15 of the
Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā records). According to
Naraharinātha's edition of this
rukkā, the document starts with
the invocation
śrīdurgā sahayaḥ and contains in the blank space
above the main text the phrase
srī 5 jījyū vājyājyū which is to
be added below (
Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461).
[⇑] 2. This is apparently an abbreviation of
lephaṭenaṭa (i.e. lieutenant).
[⇑] 3. The legend is not readable but can be reconstructed as:
śrī tilakavīra 63 (cf. e.g.
K_0460_0001).
[⇑] 4. Probably since this
copy is written on the same sheet as the copy of a letter from King
Raṇabahādura to
MahantaBhuvaneśvaranātha (cf.
K_0469_0006), only a short form
of this common formula is used here, and the information that Tīlaka Bāhādura Cã
is the
ḍiṭṭhā of
Rānāgāũmaṭha is skipped over as well.
[⇑] 5. This emendation is
based on Naraharinātha's edition (cf. note 1)
[⇑] 6. The date corresponds to 19 October 1829.
