Hail! The wife of the thrice venerable Mahārājā Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā (who is eminent, very mighty and has arms like a staff etc.), the thrice venerable Mahārānī Kīrti Bhakti Kumārī Devī1 together with [her] son, the venerable General Ḍamvara Jaṅga Bahādūra Rāṇā, made on the 1st of the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha in the [Vikrama era] year 1937 a ritual declaration (saṃkalpa) and had—out of love for the glorious Macchindranātha of Patan, the supreme lord—[the following objects] constructed and offered [to the deity]: a tympanum (toraṇa) made of silver for the pinnacle of the chariot to be used for the procession; for that tympanum, an idol of the deity Vajrasattva made of silver and a golden crest-jewel (cūḍāmaṇi), to which [latter] are affixed 1 big and 10 [smaller] gold pieces (molaṃvā). Whoever acts greedily or sinfully will incur one of the five great sins (pañcamahāpātaka).

Commentary

This is one of three votive inscriptions by Rāṇā family members applied to the surface of the pinnacle (Nev. cunāmvaḥ) of the Buṅgadyaḥ chariot, the other two being NHDP_0001_0141 and NHDP_0001_0143. The inscription is documented by NHDP as LAL0041_I_010 and the inscribed object as LAL0001-023 under LAL0001. The Vajrasattva statue mentioned in the inscription, documented as LAL0001-024, is fixed to the top surface of the chariot.

Notes

1. Probably an alternative name of Minā Mahārānī, the mother of Ḍamvara Jaṅga (see Rāṇā VS 2059, 193). []
