Abstract

Hail! On the 13th of the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha in the glorious Vikrama era year 1886 5 silver plates—[made by melting down] 597 tolās of silver one-rupee coins from the Patna [mint] with a value of 722|| mohararupaiyā̀̀s—for the feast during daśakarma were produced from the revenue of the thrice glorious Matsyendranātha with the approval (mārphata) of the venerable General sāheba1 in the presence of the citāīdāra, ḌiṭṭhāHākyā Kaṭuvāla2 [of the Matsyendranātha temple] and the biseṭs of Ṅākhācuka and Īkhārakhu. In the production process, 8|| tolās of silver were lost. Whoever acts out of greed for these plates will incur [punishment for] the five great sins (pañcamahāpātaka). Auspiciousness.

Commentary

According to Owens 1989, Buṅgadyaḥ undergoes two separate daśakarmapūjās: At the beginning of the first one, with the Nyekhu painters, the spirit of the deity is retransferred from a jar into the renovated image (Owens 1989, 210). The second one is carried out by pānjus two days later without the retransferral of the deity's spirit (Owens 1989, 216). According to Owens's documentation of the daśakarmapūjā involving the Nyekhus, food is offered to Buṅgadyaḥ on several occasions (Owens 1989, 211–12). During the annaprāśana (first rice-feeding), the deity is fed from five trays with cooked rice and other food, among it a portion of the right jaw of the skull of a buffalo offered to Hayagrīva the evening before (Owens 1989, 212). The five plates mentioned in this inscription very probably refer to the five trays of the type observed by Owens. However, the five plates were produced on the occasion of the second daśakarmapūjā (with the pānjus), which takes place on the 13th of the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha (see Locke 1980, 264)—the same date recorded on the inscription. Since Hākyā Kaṭuvāla is the only person mentioned in the inscription, one may assume that he was either instrumental in ordering the plates or wanted to claim the prestige associated with it mainly for himself. The inscription was previously published in Koirālā VS 2052, 1063.

Notes

1. This refers probably to General Bhīmasena Thāpā. []

2. In VS 1883 Hākyā Kaṭuvāla was entrusted with the overseership of the Luthāma Guṭhī in service to Buṅgadyaḥ (see K_0015_0031E). []
