Abstract

This executive order of King Rājendra directs eight Kusles who play musical instruments at the rituals of Śrī Tripureśvara Mahādeva to perform their duties regularly and so protect themselves from dismissal.

Śrī 3 Tripureśvara -1

[Main text:]

Hail! [This is] an executive order (rukkā) of the venerable supreme king of great kings.2

Āge: To the eight Kusle in the particulars [below] who play musical instruments in the evening and morning at -1 (i.e. the thrice veneralble Tripureśvara [temple]3 ).

You [have been ordered] previously to play musical instruments in the evening and morning. [Concessions in] juditial fines (daṃḍakuṃḍa) and escheat property laws (maryo aputālī) that you have enjoyed in the past have been accorded to please -1 (i.e the thrice venerable Tripureśvara4 ). We [hereby] confirm the previously stablished custom (thiti) and [declare] that [you and] the descendants of your descendants [shall not be subject to] dismissal as long as you regularly attend to your work. Mindful of your duties, enjoy [the particulars listed below] as you have done before. Perform the task unfailingly of playing [your] musical instruments in the evening and morning.

Commentary

The emoluments for the Kusles listed in this document were established in another document (DNA_0012_0016) issued in VS 1876 which lists the land granted to the guṭhī of Tripureśvara temple, as well as the emoluments for the people working for and at the temple.


Notes

1. It is unknown what this number, perhaps added by a later hand in the upper margin, refers to. It could indicate a page number as the number 6 can be found in K_0019_0008, suggesting that these two copies may have once belonged to the same ledger. []

2. The reigning king at the time the present document was issued was Rājendra (r. 1816–1846). []
