On the day of akṣayatṛtīyā in the bright fortnight of Vaiśākha in the glorious [Vikrama era] year 1940, the venerable Western Commanding General (paścima tarphakā kamyāṃḍiṅ janarala) Jitajaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā (text: Jītajaṅga Vahādura Rāṇā), [son of?]1 the thrice venerable Mahārāja Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā, donated—out of love for the glorious Matsyendranātha—[this] gilded [flag].
The flag on which this inscription is engraved is one of two flags set up on each side of the entrance to the sanctum on the Buṅgadyaḥ chariot. The donation of the flag recorded in the inscription took place on akṣayatṛtīyā—the last day before the chariot procession starts (Locke 1973, 27)—which is not only an auspicious date, but also ensured public visibility for donated objects during the upcoming procession. It belongs to a group of inscriptions recording the sponsorship of chariot fixtures by members of the Rāṇā family such as NHDP_0001_0141, NHDP_0001_0142 and NHDP_0001_0143.
