Abstract

As the first part of this five-metre-long muculkā informs, the magistrate (bicārī) of the Salyan court (adālata)—following the orders of a baḍāpatra from the prime minister and a purjī from the Salyan gauḍā—directed the people of the king of Salyan to investigate state of affairs at Bhagavantanātha's monastery (maṭha) in Rānāgāũ after the death of Mahanta Chatranātha and to prepare a detailed list of the maṭha's property (tāyadātī). Among the signees of the document were the said bicārī, the kote of the district office and two soldiers who were responsible for preparing the list, six witnesses, a person from Śrīgāū̃ who provided information regarding Bhagavantanātha's maṭha in Dang, four people who were appointed as custodians of the property (among them the bhaṇḍārī and diṭṭhā of the Rānāgāũ maṭha) and the two competing claimants to the mahanta-ship, Lokanātha and Devīnātha. The following assets are listed: cash found in the maṭha sorted by currency (tables 1 and 2); jewellery and gems (table 3); jewellery and vessels made of gold (table 4) or silver (table 5); utensils made of copper (table 6); bronze (table 7); a bronze alloy (table 8); brass (table 9); white metal (table 10) or iron (table 11); seventy-two iron weapons (table 12); seals (table 13); clothes (table 14); other objects (table 15), purchased clothes (table 16); biped or quadruped animals (table 17); slaves (table 18); and goods in the maṭha in Dang (table 19). It furthermore summarizes the content of eighteen legal documents (table 20) and lists the revenue from the different landholdings (table 21), the annual expenditures of the maṭha (table 22) and, finally, goods obtained under rakama obligations (table 23).

Śrī 5 Sarkāra – 2

Venerable Commander[-in-]Chief – 1

[main text:]

Written by us, the persons specified in the particulars (tapasila), who live in different places

Āge: A baḍāpatra was issued by [the Venerable Commander-in-Chief]2 on Monday, the 31st solar day (gate) of Āṣāḍha in the [Vikrama era] year [19]64, stating: "As MahantaChatranātha has passed away, halt all transactions so that the possessions of that monastery (i.e. the maṭha of Bhagavantanātha, which had been headed by Chatranātha) are not dispersed, appoint as witnesses persons serving the king of Salyan, Saṃsera Bāhādura Sāhā, prepare [a list] of property (tāyadātī)3 , prepare an exact list (lagata) of where [and] how much land is registered under this maṭha [and] inform [us] within 35 days." Accordingly, a purjī was issued by the Salyan district office (gauḍā) on Saturday, the 12th solar day (gate) of Śrāvaṇa in the [Vikrama era] year [19]64, stating: "Act duly in accordance with what has been written above [and] inform [us]." We complied when the magistrate (bicārī) in the Salyan court (adālata), having appointed persons serving the king of Salyan as witnesses, requested: "In accordance with [the above-mentioned purjī] write down truthfully, without any decrease or increase, the possessions, the cash and [other] property, the gold [and] silver present in this maṭha, where the landholdings are, how much the land revenue is, [and] what household articles, bipeds, quadrupeds, movable [and] unmovable [assets there] are." We have written down in the particulars (tapasila) whatever there is, such as the land traditionally registered under this maṭha, the land revenue, cash and [other] property, gold, silver, pots and pans, bipeds, quadrupeds, movable [and] unmovable [assets], legal documents [and] small arms. [The list] is exact. There are no discrepancies. If it is proven that some discrepancy has occurred, that goods were hidden [and] fewer goods were written down, and if more goods than written in the tāyadatī turn up, [and] if we, when questioned, cannot present the exact goods according to the tāyadatī, we will compensate according to the law. We have freely and willingly drawn up [this] tāyadatī4 muculkā and submitted [it] through the Salyan court to [Śrī 5 Sarkāra]5 .6

Commentary

This muculkā is a key document for the study of Bhagavantanātha's tradition, and not just because the meticulously prepared inventory list provides valuable insight into the material culture of his monastic institutions. It also marks an important turning point. It was the first time since their foundation by the venerated siddha that the two maṭhas had been subjected to such a thorough investigation by the state. Although the local officials who issued the present document seemingly supported the tradition's customary way of passing on property and tapped the late mahanta's disciple, Lokanātha, as the one who was to receive the maṭha (see note 95), the maṭhas' formerly broad autonomy and that of their mahanta would soon undergo a drastic downturn. Custodians of the property were appointed and, as we know from other documents (see e.g. K_0233_0064), two years later the maṭhas’ estates were being called "state holdings" (sarkārako tāluka). However, the appropriation of the maṭhas' property by the state and the integration of the two monasteries into the central guṭhi administration ran into several problems. This is evident from a report issued almost a year after the present document (K_0468_0061). In VS 1965, the king of Salyan (Samsera Bahādura Sāha) and Colonel Vīra Bahādura Basnyāt Kṣetri of the Salyan district office (gauḍā) revisited Rānāgāũ and revised the present tayādatī record. Following their orders the two officials made corrections109 and additions110 to the list and discussed in some detail the major difficulties in assessing the landholdings, their produce and the expenditures of the maṭha. They pointed out the fact, that since the mahanta took the produce of the land under his own control and conducted all business transactions personally without writing anything down, there wasno list or accounting of revenue and expenditures available (K_0468_0061, lines 55-58). Another problem was the lack of a proper survey (nāpī) and tax assessment records (jammābandī), especially for the seven maujās in Dang, Deukhuri and Sunar (K_0468_0061, lines 38-48 and passim).

Notes

1. This archival note indicates the card number (of bundle 15 of the Guṭhī Bandobasta Aḍḍā records). []

2. Inserted from the space above. From the date of the document, this must refer to Prime Minister Candra Śamśera Jaṅga Bahādura Rāṇā. []

3. The first akṣara of tāyadatī is written in a way that could also be read as jāyadatī. Both words are adjectives relating to a noun (tāyadāta or jāyadāta respectively) that can either mean "property, estate" or "confiscation" (cf. Parājulī et al. VS 2067: s.v. tāyadāta and jāyajāta (=jāyadata)). Given the fact that the document mentions at the end not only witnesses who were present when the tāyadāta was itemized but also persons who were appointed as custodians of the possessions, the assets listed below under “Particulars" were seemingly indeed confiscated. []

4. See note 3. []

5. Inserted from the space above. []

6. The more than five-metre-long document consists of several sheets of paper glued to each other. Here and elsewhere, seals were impressed over the splicing. []

7. A later report (K_0468_0061 lines 21f.) argues that the item listed as khāli hirā in the present document is not a diamond but a piece of crystal (for more on this report, see the Commentary below). []

8. As in case of the "unset diamond" (cf. the previous note), the same later report doubts the information given in the present document and argues that the yellow gems inlaid in the armlet cannot be topazes because a sample could be ground down into a yellow powder (K_0468_0061 lines 23f.). []

9. Originally the text also contained the word cadī here, but it was deleted by impressing a seal over it. []

10. Bhāḍā /bhā̃ḍā cannot mean "(cooking) vessels" here but is used with a broader meaning (cf. McGregor 1993: s.v. bhā̃ḍa). []

11. The actual number of items listed in the table below is 63 not 53. []

12. Cf. Parājulī et al. VS 2067: s.v. ṭhose and ṭhosyā. []

13. Cf. note 10. []

14. A particular kind of ornament from Mysore? []

15. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

16. Cf. note 10. []

17. The reading of the first syllable of the word is uncertain. It appears to be ka, the lower part of the akṣara being covered over in ink. The reading ku° is conjectured. []

18. Cf. note 10. []

19. All items in this table are kasakuṭe (i.e. made of kasakuṭa) kāsa (i.e. kā̃so). []

20. Cf. note 10. []

21. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

22. Or a small (frying) pan (cf. McGregor 1993: s.v. kaḍāhī). []

23. The reading and meaning of the word are unclear. []

24. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

25. The reading and meaning of the line's first word are uncertain. []

26. Probably a particular kind of rifle used by amaladāras. []

27. On so-called "Lamchar" guns, see Elgood 2020: 85-101. []

28. In the chronicle titled "Nepāla Deśako Itihāsa" published in Ancient Nepal the word hoṣṭarī is repeatedly mentioned in connection with cavalry. The text reports, for example, that 500 British (gorā) horsemen (risallā) together with a British palṭana and four hoṣtarī cannons (topa) came from Illahabad to fight in Jasrathpur (Anonymous 1974: 10). Cf. also sabāra hoṣtarī bhanne (ibid.: 15). Could the hoṣtarī nāla be a carbine (a compact rifle with a shortened barrel) used by the cavalry? []

29. I.e. a barrel manufactured in Pyuthan. []

30. The meaning of the first word (ṭulā) is unclear. Given the fact that and ṭh are sometimes hardly distinguished, one might read ṭhulā but the subentries go on to differentiate between big (ṭhulā) and small (sānā) [seals], so this would not make much sense. []

31. It seems that this number was corrected and the correction attested by impressing a seal. []

32. The reading (and also the meaning) of the line's first word is uncertain. It looks like pachmī which makes no sense in Nepālī. Could it be a corruption of pacchima, i.e. Western, or of paśmīnā/pasmīnā, i.e. pashmina wooll(en)? []

33. Phirkī or phirke denotes anything which spins, especially a spindle. Could phīrkī kyāpa ṭopī denote a spindle-shaped (i.e. conical) cap as worn, for instance, by the mahanta of Caughera (see e.g. Bouillier 2017: plate 10)? []

34. The word kaccī or (as in later entries of the table) kacī probably indicates that the material (cotton?) is untreated or raw. []

35. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

36. See the previous note but one. []

37. Due to damage to the paper, this item cannot be deciphered. []

38. The reading (ḍamalā or jmalā?) and meaning of this item are unclear. []

39. The meaning of this line is unclear. According to Turner barā̃t or balā̃t is "a sort of serge cloth" (1931: s.v. barā̃t). If one translates: "hemless (? kaccī) serge cloth of an elephant [named] Phula (?)" the -ko at the end of the line would be superfluous. If the first word is indeed phula, it could also denote a flower-shaped ornament or a "flat gold plate worn on the top of a woman's head" (Turner 1931: s.v. phul), but the translation "ornament of a serge cloth of an elephant" still is dubious. []

40. The meaning of the second word (tareḍā or gareḍā?) is unclear. []

41. The beginning of the line is unclear. []

42. The meanings given for kose in the Nepālī Bṛhat Śabdakośa do not fit the present context. In Hindi, kausā has as one meaning "a kind of silk manufactured in Madhya Pradesh" (McGregor 1993: s.v.). However, the translation given above is uncertain. []

43. Lit. "of striped colours" (dhāre raṃ(for raṅga)ko). []

44. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

45. Cf. McGregor 1993: s.v. phālā; Parājulī et al. VS 2067: s.v. phāla and phālī; Turner 1931: s.v. phāli. []

46. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

47. The number is hidden under a seal. []

48. According to Naraharinātha's edition, this lālamohara of King Surendra refers to a quitclaim deed (phārchāpatra) drawn up more than 40 years earlier [in the name of Gosāī̃Rupanātha (cf. Naraharinātha VS 2022: 462) and] dated Thursday, the 4th of the bright fortnight of Āṣādha in the [Vikrama] era year 1887 (1830 CE), which confirms that the listed landholdings—formerly kuśabirtās of rājaguruRaṅganātha Paṇḍīta and his relatives Śrīkisna Paṇḍīta and Rājanārāyena Paṇḍīta (names are spelled as they appear in Naraharinātha's edition)—were bought for the sum of 3,201 mo[hara]ru[paiyā̃]s (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 464f.; see also Bouillier 1991: 160). []

49. Naraharinātha's edition of the document has "salyānā ḍumrījyūlāko ṣeta 1।" (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 464) and a copy filmed by the NGMPP reads "sallyānā ḍumrajyulā°" (K_0469_0020). []

50. See the next note. []

51. The addition is based on Naraharinātha's edition, which has makaiko bija here (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 465). []

52. Naraharinātha's edition gives the name as Hyāṃgāu (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 465). []

53. For a copy of this document issued by King Rājendra, see K_0469_0019. []

54. The said document of King Rājendra mentions that when the land was mortgaged the king of Phalabang took 160 rupees from Rūpanātha; it furthermore defines the borders of the plot (see Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461 and K_0469_0023). []

55. In Naraharinātha's edition and a copy of this document issued by King Rājendra, the name of the ambala is given as Pachīllī Dāṅ. The size of the field in "Siragāũ" is given as requiring 60 murīs of seeds (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461; K_0469_0018). []

56. According to Naraharinātha's edition, the size of the field is given as requiring 38 murīs of seeds. Furthermore, there is another field requiring 57 murīs of seeds in Ḍāḍāgāũ in Hāpura ambala (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461; see also K_0469_0018). []

57. Elsewhere the name is given as Khaḍkā Koṭa (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461) or Khaḍkākoṭa (K_0469_0018, see also note 74). According to Naraharinātha's edition this place and a field [measured as] requiring 20 murīs of seeds in Cakuvāgāũ (not mentioned in the present document) are located in the ambala of Deukhuri (VS 2022: 461; see also K_0469_0018). 58. Elsewhere the name is given as Avalāpāni (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461) or Avalāpānī (K_0459_0018). []

59. According to Naraharināths's edition the size of the vārī ghaḍerī is given as requiring 5 pāthīs of seeds (VS 2022: 461; see also K_0469_0018). []

60. Its size is given as requiring 10 pāthīs of seeds (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 461; see also K_0469_0018). []

61. In Naraharinātha's edition of the document (VS 2022: 461) and a copy filmed by the NGMPP (see K_0469_0022), the place is spelled Pyādā and said to be located in the ambala of Salyan. []

62. The question here is whether vanako is governed only by banāulo or also by the words denoting all levies that follow. []

63. A catch-all phrase for different unrecorded and unclaimed sources of revenue (cf. note 8 in K_0120_0024)? []

64. The word phalāmenī is not recorded in dictionaries, but we find phalāme, which usually denotes something made of or related to iron (see e.g. Parājulī et al. VS 2067: s.v.) or is otherwise, according to Turner, “a partic. kind of tree with a hard wood" (1931: s.v.). Does the text refer to a tax or customs duty (see next note) on iron or the wood of the said tree? []

65. The question is whether sāyera refers here to all kinds of customs duties or to those only for phalāme (see last note). []

66. While upatī denotes "income (from agriculture, work etc.), profit", khapata means "consumption, selling off". []

67. The details of the date are uncertain. Naraharinātha's edition of the mentioned document (VS 2022: 460) and two available copies (K_0123_0050 and K_0469_0025) all give the year as 1854 but differ regarding the tithi (for further details, see K_0123_0050, note 11) []

68. For this document of King Rājendra, see Naraharinātha VS 2022: 462 and K_0469_0028. []

69. Naraharinātha's edition of this dharmapatra gives the year as "sāke 1690" (1769 CE), which is probably correct (VS 2022: 458). []

70. The year (in the present document hidden under an impressed seal) is supplemented according to Naraharinātha's edition of a certified copy of the rukkā daskhata (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 454-456). For a brief a discussion of the lawsuit between Khīmānātha and Haṃsanātha, the mahanta of Mṛgasthalī, which le d to a split of the maṇḍalāi revenue, see Zotter 2018: 455f. and 2022: 217f. (with further references). []

71. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

72. The date corresponds to 21 December 1776. In another original of this document, one kept in the National Archives, the date of the lālamohara is given as "Wednesday, the 8th of the bright fortnight of Agahana", i.e. 18 December (microfilmed as DNA_0014_0050; see also D.R. Panta VS 2025: 35). []

73. The meaning of this phrase is unclear. Naraharinātha's edition has "māhānāsti māṭo" (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 459). []

74. Naraharinātha's edition has "Kharkākoṭa" (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 459). Discussing the syāhāmohara, Bouillier assumes that "Kharkakot" is another name for "Śrigāū" (Bouillier 1991: 13). She refers to the Yogīvaṃśāvalī, where the place is called "Kharkākoṭā Śrī gāu" (Naraharinātha n. d.: 88), and to a passage in a copperplate at the monastery there which states that the village granted by the king "received the name of Śrigāū" (śirgā nāu dharyāNaraharinātha VS 2022: 414). []

75. For an unfortunately damage copy of this document issued by King Rājendra, see K_0469_0021. According to this copy, the lālamohara also records the sums that were taken by the king of Salyan (in total [1?]960 rupees) and provides information regarding the borders and sizes of the mortgaged land plots. Unlike the summary given in the present document, the copy does not mention the word birtā but grants a bā̃dhāko mohara and orders: "... consider the bādhā [as yours and] enjoy [its fruits]" (...bhāṃdā jānī bhogya gara). []

76. For this document, see K_0469_0010. []

77. Naraharinātha has "suvā (for subbā) Rudravira Sāhi" (Naraharinātha VS 2022: 460). []

78. In Naraharinātha's edition the name is spelled Jyūdhana Khatrī, and a third addressee is mentioned, namely Raghuvira Rānā (VS 2022: 460). []

79. For a copy of this document, see K_0469_0029. []

80. The Vikrama era date given here and in the copy of the document filmed as K_0469_0030 corresponds to 22 February 1828, indeed a Friday. Naraharinātha's edition deviates and has "samvat 1885" (VS 2022: 461), that is Thursday, 12 March 1829 and probably wrong. Furthermore, the Śāka era year, given in all three sources as 1748, does not correspond to the VS years mentioned. If we assume that VS 1884 is correct it should be 1749. []

81. Cf. K_0469_0030: "... saye dui 200 rupaiñā lī vṛt[ta] gālidīyau". According to Naraharinātha's edition the text reads "... saye duī 200 rupaiñā liyau vṛttā āli diyau" (VS 2022: 461). []

85. In a later report, it is added that the mahanta also purchased mustard needed for oil for 1 mo[ha]r[a]ru[paiyā̃] (K_0468_0061, line 51). []

86. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

89. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

90. The reading of what appears as janān as janā 5 is uncertain, but if correct it would mean that every clerk received annually 19 mohararupaiyā̃s an annual salary—compared to the other figures listed, a reasonable amount. []

91. For abhyāyata (from S. abhi-ā-yam), cf. abhyāgata (from S. abhi-ā-gam) meaning, among other things, "a guest, a visitor", but at least in Hindī also having the specific meaning "a holy man, an ascetic" (McGregor 1993: s.v.). []

92. Several seals were impressed over the splicing. []

93. Due to damage the word cannot be read with certainity. It could be patharako or patatharako for pattharako. []

94. This item, a kerosene canister (maṭītela kanīṣṭara), is deleted from the list. The cancellation is attested by the imprint of several seals. []

95. The opinion that Lokanātha is the one who is to receive the monastery (maṭha pāune) is shared by a later report (see K_0468_0061, lines 161-166). For his eventually unsuccessful struggle for the right to inherit the mahanta-ship of his late guru Chatranātha, see, among others, Commentaries in K_0469_0033 and K_0469_0046. []

96. The end of the partly illegible signature cannot be read or reconstructed with certainty. That Devīnātha, the older brother of the late Mahanta Chatranātha, was living in Rānāgāũ is known from other documents (see e.g. K_0469_0045). []

97. As we know from his signature in another document (see K_0469_0002), he was the bhaṇḍārī in Rānāgāũ. []

98. As the ḍiṭṭhā of the Rānāgāũ maṭha, Tilavīra Caṃ (also known as Tīlaka Bāhādura Cã or the like) attested several copies of document copies which were sent from the maṭha to Kathmandu (see e.g. K_0468_0062). He was also among the signees of Lokanātha's petition (bintīpatra) requesting to be appointed as mahanta. []

99. If the place of residence was mentioned along with the signature, it has been lost due to breakage. []

101. According to an elucidatory statement by Ṭīkārāṃ Nyaupāne, this place is spelled Sejavāl Ṭākurā and is located in Salyan (see K_0469_0043). []

102. Elsewhere the last name of this person who signed the present document as “Jhumāra Juṃ Acārje" is given as Upādhya, Ācarja Upādhya or Ācarja Upādhyaye (see K_0469_0033 and K_0469_0041). []

104. The signature cannot be deciphered with certainty. []

105. The name of the residence cannot be deciphered because it is hidden under the seals which were impressed over the splicing. []
